App Overview
Dr. Panda’s Mailman app is full of play, and imagination. It explores the life of a panda bear mailman. You can paint your own postcards, and make your own packages. You can travel through mountains, forest, fields, and homes to deliver the mail. While on the adventure, you can make ducks fly, push boxes into a river, do tricks over ramps, and explore with no limitations or rules. All of the Dr. Panda apps focus on preparing kids for life. They created this app to help kids learn their way around neighborhoods and notice their surroundings. This app is part of the Dr. Panda series of apps and it is created by TribePlay.
App Features
One thing I absolutely love about this app are the animal characters. They have a lot of personality with different jobs, schedules, and behaviors. They are not always found in the same place which is great because kids will be continually challenged. There is so much to explore that it will take a long time for your child to master this app or get bored.
There are no third party ads or in app purchases. Therefore you are able to keep children engaged in this app without worrying about iTunes charges.
Another big perk to this app is that there are no wait times. It is a big world of exploration through the app and doesn’t have any loading times to go from level to level or activity to activity.
Navigating The App
When you enter the app, you will be brought to the main menu. Once you click on the panda bear, you will be able to begin. You will start in the post office where you can explore the room, create a post card or fill a package. As you are clicking on different objects, you will hear fun sound effects and interact with the characters. There is a wall of animal characters that you will choose from when creating your mail or package. The character you choose will be the one that you need to find later during delivery. When filling a package, you will get to pour styrofoam peanuts into the box. When you are creating a post card, you can stamp, and draw as much as you like. After you have created your postcard or package it will be time to deliver the mail.
Delivering the mail is an adventure that requires you to search and find the correct characters’ house. To know which animal you need to find, you will simply look at the top right corner of the screen. There you will see a picture of the correct character to find. You will also see a squirrel. He is your go-to helper in finding the right house. If you click on the squirrel, he will show up on the screen and help direct you. It’s easy to get lost so you will likely follow the squirrel quite a bit. After you have found the right person, you will hand them their mail and they will say thank you.
To go back to the post office and create more mail to deliver, you can simply click on the envelope icon on your top left corner of the screen and create another package or color another post card.
What’s Great About This App
This app is absolutely adorable. It is packed full of great features and gives you or the child an opportunity to play without limits. I would definitely recommend this app for kids that love exploration and the iPad. I also think this is a great option for kids that struggle with attention deficits because there is no waiting and minimal rules. Overall it has great sound effects, incredible visual support, and fun things to explore. I would also recommend this app to those that struggle with role play as this would introduce the concept beautifully! This app is geared for kids ages 6-8 but I do believe it would be appropriate for some children younger than 6 as well. This app is very visual so it’s easy for any child engaged. The characters are fun for preschoolers but they might not understand how to deliver the mail without assistance. Furthermore, I do think this app will encourage children to be more aware of their surroundings and will start the process for neighborhood awareness.
