App Overview
The Word Creativity Kit is a creative writing app that allows the child to freely explore and express their feelings through colorful words, fonts, and backgrounds. You can create a masterpiece ,a journal entry, or a poem by designing beautiful and expressive pages. There are 7 categories and about 4500 words. You can also add custom words into the app. I think that many children will love the creativity in this app and may want to expand their vocabulary to express themselves even more. The Word Creativity Kit was designed by a primary school teacher who wanted to help children write short stories and poems. The company, Gebo Kano believes in developing educational apps that inspire creativity, innovative thinking, and literacy. You can learn more about the development of the app at the Gebo Kano website. Lets get started!
How it Works
When you open the app, you will see the main menu. I found it to be a little confusing at first. Once I read the instruction guide, it all became clear. The instruction guide can be found by clicking on the question mark on the main menu. After you have become familiar with the guide, you can begin your creative writing, or learn more about the 9’s website. You can also get inspired with the Usage Ideas. To view these however, you will have to download the file through Evernote or iBooks. I found this to be a little bit of a nuisance and would much rather have it available through the app. Once you reach the creative writers workshop, you will be able to name your own book. You can make multiple books for different topics, stories, or journals. More than one child can use this app and have their own book. One thing to note is their are no pass codes for the books. Anyone can access any of the books. I would love to see pass codes in the future, especially if some children might use this as a diary or journal and don’t want their sibling getting into it.
Creative Writing
Alright so it’s time to begin writing! You have a toolbar with many options. You can add text, change the colors, add backgrounds, add custom words, and so much more. You can drag the text anywhere on the page. You can expand it to make it bigger or smaller and double click to adjust the layers of different words or pictures. There is a nice variety of clip art graphics available as well. You can put them next to words and create a really cool theme. When you start, you also have the option to create a page with predetermined words. Both ways were kind of fun to brainstorm with. It definitely takes some exploring to figure out what you like best and what works for you. I do think a younger child (6 and under) may need a little help at first navigating the app and figuring out what to do. Once they understand it however, it will be easy and fun.
What’s Great About This App
Overall I love that this app inspires creativity and learning at the same time. It definitely sparks a childs imagination and allows them to express whatever feelings they have. I found the navigation and options a little confusing at times but it is a beautifully designed app. The colors are bright and exciting. One addition I would have for especially children with special needs would be labeling and even definitions for the words. I think it would help kids retain new words and learn a little more about vocabulary. While this app was developed for children between the ages of 9-11, I think it would benefit children as young as 5 years old. It does encourage and teach a little vocabulary but I think it mostly just exposes a child to words and allows them to begin journal writing, poetry, and creative expression. The colors, fonts, and backgrounds are really fun and easy to use. The app includes no outside advertisements, or in-app purchases. It is easy for a child to share their creation in the camera roll or through email. The child does have access to dropbox and air play. This may not be wanted by parents. I think one improvement would be to move those options into the parent settings. If you are looking for a journal or poetry app for kids, this is a great fit.
